Inflammation Killing Ginger Juice, Not for the Faint of Heart

Ginger Juice

Hi!! Recipe number two is finally here, and I am so stoked to share it with you! This week's recipe isn't as indulgent as blueberry crumble, but if you are open to a punchy ginger elixir that will make your body come alive, continue reading.

This recipe recently came to my awareness. After a nasty case of canker sores I was feeling so miserable that I searched the internet for any sort of relief. On top of the canker sore out break, some symptoms I have been battling had crept back. Call me crazy, but I felt like my immune system was giving up on me. I was searching for remedies to heal canker sores faster and also looking at ways to prevent them in the future. I have yet to solve my canker sore problem entirely, but overall I would say my health is getting better, and I think the ginger juice is a contributing factor.

I found this ginger juice recipe from Chris Kresser, an amazing functional health practitioner who believes in a whole foods approach. He recommends sipping on this ginger juice throughout the day if you feel a cold coming on or if you generally feel under the weather. I don't believe in magic pills, but when I took my first sip of this juice I WAS SOLD! This stuff is powerful. It did not magically heal my canker sores, but it did have a profound effect on my muscle aches/soreness, and my overall energy.

Here is my warning. If you think you've had ginger before, erase everything you think you know because this is not like the ginger teas that you buy at the store. This juice calls for one pound of ginger. I SAID ONE POUND! That is a lot of freakin' ginger. The flavor of this juice is not for everyone, but if the spice can be tolerated it is well worth it. I honestly passed this juice around at work to let people try it, and they were sold.

I want to reiterate, this ginger juice is meant to be sipped on throughout the day. Don't feel weak if you are not able to chug this down in one sitting. That will most likely cause you to feel ill, not better. When I make this juice, I take it to work and sip on it throughout an 8 hour period. I hope you feel as great on this juice as I do, and don't forget to put this recipe in your pocket for when cold and flu season rolls around! Cheers!

  • 1 lb ginger (I used organic)

  • 1/2 lemon

  • 1 tbsp. honey (heaping)

  • 1/8 tsp. cayenne pepper

  • 6 oz water

  1. In pieces, juice the ginger root. Ginger is very fibrous, so It is best to break into smaller pieces first before placing into a juicer. 1 pound of ginger should yield around 4 ounces of ginger juice.

  2. Next, add honey to juiced ginger. This should dissolve the honey faster because of the acidic environment.

  3. Then, add water, lemon juiced, and cayenne pepper. Mix well.

  4. Sip and enjoy! Seriously please sip.

**This recipe will be easiest with a juicer, but if you don't have a juicer and are determined enough, you can hand grate the ginger and squeeze it through a cheesecloth.
